Okay it’s got a lame title but it did motivate me to put my extensive Miles Davis collection back on my iPod after a 12 month hiatus. the problem there after was that now I had too much jazz so I got rid of my Louie Armstrong. trimmed down my Coltrane and pretty much deleted my Charlie Parker. I may add some Monk later to mix things up. What I’ll probably do is keep the live at Fillmore and abstain from adding the rest of the live recordings. So to get back to the original point. Miles Davis is a legend and this book does him justice. Check it out.

GOLD PANDA

LUCKY SHINER

when it’s good it’s very good. when it’s not. it’s above average

Film of the Day
Point Blank is the ultimate revenge movie it’s so good they redid it twice most recently with Mel Gibson’s highly adequate ‘Payback’ and in the seventies Robert Duvall had a shot at it with the highly entertaining ‘The Outfit’. But neither of them come close to the sheer brute violence and focused rage that Lee Marvin brought to the screen. His best mate betrays him and takes his bird! Come on you know Lee Marvin’s not having that. He wrecks terror on all involved and they deservedly feel his wrath. The DVD has a really informative directors commentary as Steve Sodenbergh hangs out with the movie’s director John Boorham and basically lets him know he’s been ripping off this movie for years. It’s a must..

Album of the Day
Sometimes writing a blog can prove to be divisive (as it should be) Followers are forthcoming with a myriad of opinions and queries. A lot of the time it’s based around what they see as my contrary taste in music ( and film for that matter) How can you critique Coltrane then go off on a tangent about some gangster rapper You review Kurosawa one week and Bowfinger the next. What gives.. I don’t get your angle. My likes and dislikes vary and they tend to cover quite a few genres and to some that’s hard to digest but for me it’s the norm and with that in mind Lil Boosie‘s ‘Superbad’ is sheer unadulterated entertainment from beginning to end. it comes out of the dirty dirty and rolls equipped with punch lines and bouncy beats. Nothing to dwell on but it sure is a lot of fun. Unfortunately Boosie’s currently in jail for violating his parole. I wonder of Miles Davis would approve..

Just got back from Berlin and had a raving good time. I do wish I’d done a little more research. I pretty much showed up with my arms outstretched like. Here I Am! Berlin is not the type of city to wing it. Getting to Berlin is like arriving in Manhattan and finding that only a few thousand people exist on the island. You walk around thinking where the f.:’k is everybody. You do a left and then a right walk down a deserted tree-lined street and then bam. There’s a party going on. People dancing, eating, spraying graffiti, (always the graffiti) riding bikes, ordering food that I can’t pronounce. Definitely check it out. it’s a city of stamina and stunning architecture. The visual remnants of its fascinating past are everywhere but at the same time it’s progressed at a lightning pace. A city in transition. Not the Germany I expected but a liberal funky loophole of creative energy and hidden gems. It’s an obscure gem of a masterpiece, kinda like the records I collect. Do the knowledge and pay it a visit..

Film of the Day

When I saw Ghost Dog for the first time all those years ago me and my mate were the only people in the movie theater. We still stood up to applaud as the screen faded and the credits rolled. Forest Whitaker puts in a remarkably complex performance as the last of the great Japanese samurai by way of Brooklyn. He doesn’t let the fact that he’s not Japanese stand in his way as he honors the code of Hagakure whilst putting in time as an assassin. Betrayal leads him down a path of righteous justice for all involved. One of my faves. Essential viewing.

Album of the Day

I remember the day my mate put me on to Portishead. A CD was hurled at me through a cloud of smoke. I studied the cover and thought he was handing me some Jarvis Cocker nonsense. I probably said something like. “What is this some Jarvis Cocker nonsense” Then I think he said something like ” Nah bruv. It’s like Hip Hop but it’s not. Kinda like Massive Attack but different” I cautiously gave it a listen and  I’ve been in the club ever since. Their second album Portishead is an extension of Dummy and Third separates the fans from the sheep but you always remember your first with fondness. Dummy is the one for me…
